Prayer for Repentance

This was referenced in an earlier post, but I wanted to make this a quick link so it’s easy to find.  If at any time you feel convicted by the Holy Spirit that perhaps your life isn’t right with God, I invite you to pray this prayer out loud:

“Heavenly Father, I know that I have sinned against you and that my sins separate me from you. I am truly sorry. I now want to turn away from my sinful past and turn to you for forgiveness. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your Son, Jesus Christ, died for my sins, that He was raised from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become my Savior and the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You and to convict me when I sin. I pledge to grow in grace and knowledge of you. My greatest purpose in life is to follow your example and do Your will for the rest of my life. Thank you for loving me just as I am.  In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

Romans 10:8-10 tells us, ” . . . the message concerning faith that we proclaim: If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”

Isn’t it is a wonderful thing that we can have assurance of our salvation?  This isn’t some magic prayer that you need to recite word for word, but merely a guide to get the conversation started if you will.  God cares more about the attitude of your heart than the words that come out of your mouth – although, profession of “Jesus as Lord” is key.  I do hope that if you find yourself in this situation, you will share it with others so they can rejoice with you and help you get plugged into a body of believers who study the Bible and gather together frequently to worship God in community. God loves you so very much that He sent his Son as a final sacrifice to reconcile you back into God’s family, and I rejoice with you in your decision to follow after Him!
