Several years ago, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. This is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the thyroid and, if allowed to go on too long, will desiccate the thyroid causing hypothyroidism and the need to take medication. The resulting chronic inflammation also causes all kinds of other health related issues secondary to the Hashimoto’s.
This was the culmination of many negative factors impacting my health over the course of my life including long-term use of antibiotics in high school for acne, poor diet, lack of sleep, high levels of chronic stress, hormone changes from pregnancy, etc. I was always thin and active growing up. But after 30+ years of abusing my body through the above-mentioned actions, and two difficult pregnancies later (and the resulting hormonal changes that go along with that), the consequences had taken hold and I was suffering from chronic fatigue. My hair was falling out, I had gained weight that I couldn’t seem to lose no matter how much I dieted, I was developing high blood pressure, etc. To make matters worse, the first couple of doctors I sought out were good MDs, but they weren’t looking at my condition through a holistic lense and seeking the root cause of the illness, so they just prescribed “band-aids” through prescription drugs for high blood pressure, adrenal fatigue, etc. which made matters worse. It wasn’t until I decided to change my doctor to a DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) and started doing my own research on diet and nutrition and its impact on the body, that I started seeing things turn around.
As I started researching this condition and slowly making changes in my nutritional supplements, diet and exercise, I’m finally starting to see positive results. And many of the changes I made have broad-reaching positive impacts on your health, so they would also benefit others who are struggling with health and wellness related issues, including autoimmune and otherwise.
Check out my Resources page to find sources I’ve used to pursue healing in my body through improved nutrition. I hope you’ll take the time to check them out to improve your health as well.
Until next time, be blessed!
